Melody of a Name Improvisation Image
Ravel used an “alpha-musical spelling” for his “Minuet sur le nom d’Haydn” by extending the musical alphabet past H (the German equivalent for B natural) in the following way (A-I, B-J C-K, D-L, E-M, F-N, G-O, H-P, etc). Engaging this same musical alphabet, organist and composer Christopher Stroh will create a two minute improvisation on the melody of the name you submit (be it for yourself or for a loved one). Each letter of the submitted name can be associated with a musical note/tone and those notes together create a simple melody. The winner will receive a digital copy of the spelled out melody of the name and a digital recording of the two minute improvisation played on the Hutchings-Votey organ of St. James Cathedral in Seattle. Notation and recording available by January 31, 2024.
